This week, we continued our learnings about Terry Fox through various books and watching this video about him. We participated in our Terry Fox run on Tuesday, as well as completed a Terry Fox guided drawing. Check out the wonderful drawings below!

On Orange Shirt Day, we read "Phyllis' Orange Shirt," as well as listened to the story, "When We Were Alone." We had an age-appropriate conversation around the history of Residential Schools. We also read the Indigenous story, "The Sharing Circle." We learned that this tradition provides opportunities for each voice to be heard, respected and valued. Students are asked to go on an outdoor walk this week(end), and search for a stick to bring to school. We will be painting and creating our own talking sticks to share at home with our families.

In Spanish, we are continuing to work on colour vocabulary, and we are are using this in conjunction with "Me gusta..." (I like...) and "No me gusta..." (I don't like...).

Please see the Sign Up Genius to sign up for a volunteer slot. Only approved CBE volunteers will be permitted to attend this trip.   As we currently have a shortage of cleared volunteers in the lower grades, parents who are cleared from Kindergarten, Grades 4 & 5 are welcome to sign up.

Today we went to the Library for the very first time and the children chose two books to borrow for the week. If your child's backpack is not large enough for 2 hardcover books, please consider sending a reusable bag to carry these books separately, or using a larger backpack. Our book exchange day is on THURSDAYS.

This week, we created colourful name mosaics, as well as started some literacy centers. Check out the pictures below of the stations and activities the children rotated through.

We completed our first full week of Kindergarten!  We had a very busy week with lots of firsts; first music class, first lunch at school, first time playing on the playground etc.

Please take note of the following information items to ensure a smooth transition to the full day kindergarten program.

1 - Footwear.  Please ensure that your child has a pair of labelled inside shoes (slip on or velcro is best).  We change our shoes many times a day, and shoes that are easy to get on and off are invaluable.

2 - Snack/Lunch - Your child will need a full lunch and a separate snack for the day.  Please tell your child  what food is for snack and what is for lunch, so they don't inadvertently eat all their food for snack.  Some parents find a separate container for snack works well.  Have your child practice opening and closing containers by themselves.  Food items with difficult packaging such as fruit cups, cheese strings etc would be best removed from packaging at home and put in a separate container.  The children have approximately 20 minutes to eat and we want to ensure that that time is spent eating, not waiting for the lunch supervisor to open containers.  Please label all containers with your child's name.  Schools in the CBE have a "Boomerang lunch" policy; anything that comes from home, goes back home and not in the garbage can at school.  This way you are able to see what your child has eaten, and allows proper sorting of compost, garbage and recycling.

3 - Extra clothes - Accidents happen.  Please put an extra change of clothes (including socks and underwear) in your child's backpack in a ziplock bag.  While we do have spare clothing if the need arises, it's always better to be in your own clothes.

4 - Backpacks - Your child will need a large backpack, big enough to fit a hardcover library book.  We will be starting our book exchange soon. If this is not possible, please put a reusable bag in your child's backpack to transport books between home and school.

Here are some of the songs we have been working on in Spanish.

Today we also had our first fire drill.  The children did very well walking out of the building calmly and quietly.

TERRY FOX RUN

Terry Fox Donation sheets went home this week. Please donate online, there is a QR code on the donation sheet. We did an excellent job raising fund for this worthy cause last year and we want to continue to support Terry Fox organization.

Thursday, September 1

We had a wonderful first day together yesterday.  We practiced entry, dismissal and bathroom procedures, read stories, coloured a page about Pete the Cat and, explored some of our centre time materials.

A reminder that beginning next week, your child should have food for both snack and lunch time, as well as a water bottle. An extra change of clothing to keep in their backpack is also helpful, in case of any accidents.

I am so excited to begin what will be an incredible year with my lovely new friends! See you all on Tuesday!
